Research
I study the haikai of Matsuo Basho and his disciples.
Basho is now a world-famous Haiku poet, but at the time of his life in Edo society, he was more of a heretic. At a time when the number of professional haikai poets was rapidly increasing, Basho dared to abandon this path and chose the peculiar way of pursuing haikai as an art form.
Why did Basho choose this way of life? What did it mean for Basho's work? What did Basho's disciples inherit from him and how did they express their individuality? And what value do Basho and his disciples' perspective have for people today? Through my research, I would like to clarify these questions.
Theme1:Theory of Haikai "Karumi"
Overview
In his later years, Basho taught “Karumi(lightness)" to his disciples. Although it has been conventionally pointed out that this was an important concept for Basho, previous studies have not clarified the essence of “Karumi". This is because Basho did not clearly state what “Karumi" was, and because conventional studies have overlooked the philosophy and way of life aspects of “Karumi" because they have only looked at “Karumi" as a style.
However, Basho's “Karumi" was taught as inseparable from his philosophy and way of life. Izen and Shiko, who were trusted by Basho at that time, understood this well. Through the study of these disciples, this research aims to clarify the philosophy and way of life of "Karumi" shared by Basho and them.

Theme2:Survey of Current Haikai Studies Abroad
Overview
Currently, haikai studies in Japan are not coordinated with Japanese studies(Japanology) abroad . There is a division in research methods and consciousness of the issues.
In this study, I survey the current haikai research’s awareness of issues in the U.S., Europe, and Asian countries, and clarify the similarities and differences with the trends of Japanese academic societies. By doing so, I would like to explore how to tie the two together for elucidate the essence of haikai(haiku) as world literature.
