Research
I am conducting fieldwork-based research on pollutant dynamics analysis, environmental impact assessment, and water environment conservation measures for the water environment from forests to lakes and bays.
Recent themes are:
1) Outflow of contaminants from agricultural land to rivers
2) Development of measurement method for bioavailable phosphorus and analysis of environmental dynamics
3) River runoff load characteristics of zinc
4) Analysis of plastics from watershed to rivers
Theme1: Understanding of water quality formation process in mountain streams
Overview
Water quality of stream differs depending on its location, land-use and geochemical composition although the relationships (interaction) has not been evaluated quantitatively.
Decrease in pH of stream water caused by acid rain is also of great concern. We are continuously monitoring the input of contaminants from non-point sources at investigating sites.
Theme2:Runoff analysis of contaminants from agricultural fields
Overview
A large amount of nitrogen and phosphorus applied through fertilizer are transported from agricultural fields to lakes and basins during rain events. We are investigating the loading and fate of contaminants in aquatic systems as well as the strategies for reduction of the contaminant loading.
Theme3:Investigation on mercury contaminations in Indonesia
Overview
In central Kalimantan (Indonesia), contamination of mercury discharged from gold-mining activities is great concern. With increasing concerns of its impact on human health and aquatic ecosystems, we are investigating the magnitude of mercury pollution in sediments and its biogeochemical processes including the transport and transformation of mercury in which gold-mining activities developed rapidly.
