Japanese Government Scholarship (Embassy Recommendation)
Graduate Level
In principle, Application for the following fiscal year (in April or October) will be open around in April, and the primary screening will be conducted around in May to June by the Japanese Embassy or a consulate in your country. Since the application process differs according to the country in which the Japanese Embassy or a consulate is located, please inquire at the Japanese embassy or consulate general in your country for details.
Those who have passed the preliminary screening will be able to apply for getting the "Letter of Provisional Acceptance" from the universities they wish to enroll in. The candidates who have obtained the letter of acceptance will be recommended to MEXT by the local Japanese Embassy through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in September. MEXT will conduct the secondary screening and select scholarship grantees among those applicants who have found recipient universities.
For Chinese nationals who have passed the screening conducted by the Japanese Embassy in China, the application schedule is the same as the one described above.

The applicants are accepted as "Research Students (Non-regular students)" or "Regular Students (Master's/Doctoral Program)". Please be sure that the applicants must pass the entrance examination of TUT to enroll in the master's or doctoral program.
Undergraduate Level
Application for the following fiscal year and the initial screening will be conducted by the Japanese Embassy or a consulate in your country. The Embassy or a consulate recommend the selected candidates to MEXT through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Following this, MEXT will conduct a secondary screening and select those applicants who have found recipient universities as scholarship grantees.
Completing a one-year preparatory education, grantees go on to the university designated by MEXT upon passing its entrance examination, The university whose examination a grantee will take will be decided by MEXT, according to the results of the academic examination in the preliminary screening held in your home country, academic achievement at the preparatory school, the grantee's proposed major subject, and the receiving capacity of the university.
